Apparently.

I suppose the enduring popularity of Classical European Opera is an example of how you don't need to understand the lyrics to enjoy the music. Carmen is sung in French yet set in Spain.
However people who are into Opera tend to be very into Opera. So they already know all of the lyrics in their own language by heart. Some even go so far as to learn the language in order to better appreciate their passion.
Originally Classic European Opera was just trash playing in the background while the trash Nepo Babies of their day met up to watch each other. Gossip about their fashion choices and try to one up each other. Being wealthy enough to be educated enough to speak a foreign language was a major flex.
The language barrier actually causes Opera to be widely misused by people who aren't that into it. "La donna è mobile" from Verdi's Rigoletto is a really famous piece of music. It's widely used in TV Shows, Movies and Commercials. So you've probably heard it, even if you don't know what it is.
However if you speak Italian you know it's really misogynistic;
"Women are so fickle! They are such b'tches!"
