Obviously, I'm not even allowed to discuss the case with people who've failed the California Bar. However the general principle from English Jurisprudence are known as the; "M'Naughten Rules."

By way of disease of the mind a person has to be unable to know what they were doing or that what they were doing was wrong. So, in exemplar, they need to genuinely believe they are living in an episode of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer." They need to genuinely believe that demons are emerging from a Hellmouth beneath a Church.

The disqualifier is that if their loss of reason was the result of taking a drug or similar psychoactive substance. However I would be confident arguing that taking medication prescribed by a properly licensed Doctor would constitute due diligence.

It was actually one of the emotional conundrums of the old Church-church, Chop-chop;

"Of course I'd prefer it if my hand was still attached to my wrist. However if what he genuinely believed to be true were true. Then not only would his actions be considered lawful, defence of self/other, they'd actually be considered quite brave. Someone might even make a TV show out of it! "
