At Least It's Keeping With The Built Environment Trend.

A lot of people don't realise that most of America is on the same Latitude as Iran, Iraq & Syria. Proper desert countries. Whereas Britain is on the same Latitude as Belarus and Alaska.

As a result most British buildings are designed to keep heat in. For example typical British houses don't have one wall. They have three; an inner brick wall, a middle concrete block wall and an outer brick wall. Often the cavities between the walls are filled with heat retaining wool. Likewise typical British windows are two panes of glass with a heat retaining gas trapped between them. Air conditioning isn't really a thing.

Also these are heatwaves. Normally it's hot during the day when the Sun is out. Then it cools overnight when the Sun goes in. During heatwaves it just stays hot overnight then gets even hotter the next day when the Sun comes out again. All the while our buildings are retaining all the heat they can.

So it's not really what the heat's like today. It's what it's going to be like at Sundown on Sunday (13/7).

The last heatwave broke around Sundown on July 1st. Within about an hour my thermometer outside was reading 5-6°C lower than my thermometer inside. Which doesn't sound like much but it was about 5% of the total temperature. Just from stepping from one side of a door to the other. I've taken to doing my last, after dark, work session out on the patio with the patio doors open. In order to bring the indoor temperature down as much as possible. While making friends with all the Moths.

When I'm not thinking about walls in way too much detail I'm working through the history of Brazil. I've got up to the Fourth Republic when Kubitschek moved the capital to Brasilia. Planned in the Brutalist style but built in the Internationalist style.

The World's largest collection of buildings in the Internationalist style of the Bauhaus is in Tel Aviv, Israel. It's called; "White City" because all the buildings are white in order to better reflect the heat. Along with smaller windows it's one of the ways they adapted designs for Northern Europe to a more American Latitude.

Or, to put it another way;

Bite me.
