It doesn't forbid the use of booby traps. Only their placement in areas where civilians are likely to encounter them along with disguising them as objects civilians would normally use. Hamas' charming habit of disguising bombs as children's toys.

Booby trapping any equipment issued to combatants, such as communication devices, is very much allowed.

What you are not allowed to do is use booby traps which are designed to cause "superfluous injury" to combatants.

An example of such a booby trap would be the so-called "Punji Sticks" which were widely used during the Vietnam War.

These are bamboo spikes designed to cause puncture or stab wounds. However they were typically also coated with faeces in order to cause secondary wound infection. The excessive, secondary "Superfluous Injury."
