Certainly since the 2001 NATO-led invasion of Afghanistan its location has made Azerbaijan a very geopolitically significant country. It used to be dubbed; "Casablanca," due to all the foreign spies who flocked there. Particularly back when the US thought its 2003 invasion of Iraq was going to allow it to springboard into an invasion of Iran.

There continue to be a lot of competing interests in Azerbaijan. Notably Iran and Israel.

Back when NATO was at least going through the motions of fighting ISIL and associated groups.The NKR region was a popular way for NATO to put pressure on Russia. Particularly the 2020 war which led to this current situation.

It was actually a joke I made when it was announced that Kim Karadashian and Kanye West were divorcing;
