There are actually two types of riding hat. What you would recognise as a riding hat, with the peak. Along with a; "Skullcap."

In most Cross-Country competitions the rule is that you have to wear a skullcap. The reasoning being that without the peak you're less likely to break your nose, should you completely faceplant.

Having once broken my nose falling off a horse, while wearing a skullcap.

I dispute the science behind that rule.
