It turns out it was the backlight and the picture control module. The latter being a complex assembly of semiconductors which is no longer available from the factory.

Personally I would have checked both. Before ordering the first part. However that's their expense, not mine.

Obviously the new one is a Smart TV. You just can't by non-Smart TV's these days.

Even if you're not going to use any of the functions.
