Perhaps That's Not How You Beg For Forgiveness.

Technically the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783) was a British civil war. As was the Irish War of Independence (1919-1921).

However British civil wars have generally been fought between Catholic Christians and Protestant Catholics. Over who gets to wear the magic hat.

It is one of the key ideological differences between Catholics and Protestants.

Catholics believe that the teachings of God and his son, Jesus Christ, are a moral code that must be followed.

If you break the moral code, sin. Then you must beg God's forgiveness. After setting right the wrong and serving a punishment, penance.

Protestants, particularly Church of England Protestants. Believe that their belief in God allows them to behave as badly as they like, whenever they like.

God will forgive them simply because they believe in him.

Essentially it's the ideology of a Sociopath.

It's a little known difference but an important one. Particularly if you consider religion to be some sort of moral code.
