In response sailors started getting tattoos on their backs. Of either a Christian cross or an image of Christ.

The thinking being that it would be sacrilegious to strike such an image.

So the Navy introduced a new rule; Anyone with such an image would recieve extra lashes.

At the 1998 World Cup David Beckham was sent off. For petulantly kicking out at another player. Causing England to be knocked out of the tournament.

As a result he was not particularly popular.

So he got a tattoo of Christ on the Cross tattooed on his back.
