Covid-19 is a droplet borne virus. It lives outside of the body within those water droplets.
Meaning the dimension you need people to distance themselves in is that of time.
Like temperature checks at airports social distancing is like those dummy buttons you get on traffic crossings. Meaningless busy work intended to calm people down by tricking them into thinking something is being done. Whether they do it or not doesn't have any impact on the outcome.
You certainly don't want to be sending the troops out to force people to do something you actually hope they're ignoring anyway.
