Not All Israelis Are Jews.
And not all Jews are Israelis.
Subtitled; "A Lesson Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Urgently Need to Learn."
Further subtitled; "A Quick Apology to Kim Kardashian-West."
The 2019 Eurovision Song Contest was held in Tel Aviv Israel. In an effort to join in the fun Kim Kardashian-West Tweeted a video of one of her children dancing to "Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus.
She captioned this video; "What We Did On Maternity Leave."
So I responded; "Outsourcing?"
After all Kim Kardashian and, we assume, Kanye West's latest child had just been born via a surrogate.
In mentioning this she stepped on a bit of a fault line.
Particularly the Eurovison nations, along with those on the American continent have long struggled with the issues surrounding gay rights.
Whether gay people should be allowed to exist, have relationships, marry, adopt children. Or even have children of their own via surrogates.
Israel and particularly Tel Aviv is just astonishingly leftwing. So tends to be thoroughly relaxed about the issue of homosexuality.
They actually won the Song Contest with Dana International. A fully transitioned male-to-female transgender person. All the way back in 1997.
Whether a Rabbi will marry you in Israel is an extremely complex question. Israelis can't even decide on who can be a Rabbi. As Sarah Silverman knows all to well.
However same-sex couples have long enjoyed full legal protection. Israel's recognised same-sex marriages performed in other countries since 2006.
Those legal protections include having children via surrogates. However Israel doesn't have a national health service. So if you want any sort of medical treatment you have to pay for it yourself.
One of the few exceptions is abortion. In Israel the state pays for abortions. A fact Israelis very much like using to wind up US Christian Evangelicals.
In the summer of 2018 there were actually big protests in Tel Aviv. Over the Parliament's refusal to extend state funding for surrogacy to same-sex couples.
What fuelled a backlash against surrogacy for all in Israel was the 2015 Nepal Earthquake.
Nepal was where many of the surrogates for Israeli couples lived. The Israeli couples immediately rushed to Nepal to save their babies. But pretty much left the surrogates to starve in the ruins.
This very much made the process of surrogacy look like very rich people exploiting very poor people.
It was that, rather than any religious concern, which offended Israel's deeply leftwing sensibilities.
Although, before you fall in love too much. Remember.
That is only if you a Jewish.
And they certainly won't let you forget that.
