Memory's a Funny Thing.
This past week I've been visiting my mothers.
Yesterday (15/11/19) I said that although I enjoyed the trip none of it immediately seemed to be of any geopolitical significance. That's not quite true. Even if by the time I returned I'd completely forgotten about it.
Part of the issue is that it's not really my story to tell. I don't even know the full story. It's more something I overheard my mothers discussing with each other.
You may remember that in November 2014 then US President Obama pledged to fix America's broken immigration system. By granting amnesty to illegal immigrants crossing the southern border. Creating the humanitarian crisis that continues to this day.
This plan completely ignored the real problems with the US immigration. Which my life conveniently managed to highlight at exactly that time.
I guy I went to school with went on to become a nuclear physicist. He also went on to fall in love with an American woman. Who was also a nuclear physicist. They wanted to get married but both the UK and US immigration systems were making that extremely difficult.
In order to obtain citizenship in either country through marriage the citizen spouse needs to earn enough to fully support the non-citizen spouse. Obviously highly paid jobs are not difficult for nuclear physicists to come by. The problem is that they require a long commitment.
So both of these two were biding time in low paid jobs, waiting for the right career to come along. Meaning they couldn't get married because neither earned enough.
It seems this guy should not bothered become a nuclear physicist. Instead he should have joined a South American slave trading/human trafficking cartel. Then Obama's America would have welcomed him with open arms.
Funnily enough once I mentioned it the matter was resolved. The last I heard they're married, living in the UK and he's doing something discreet with the Ministry of Defence.
It now turns out there is a young woman in Salisbury who has fallen madly in love with a young woman from Seattle, Washington State, US. Via the Internet.
They've been going through the saga of getting respective visas. With a possible view to getting married.
The Washington State Attorney General, Bob Ferguson and I are known to each other. We've clashed almost as often as he's sued current US President Trump. Particularly over Trump's so-called; "Muslim Ban."
So the prospect of Salisbury and Seattle being joined in a gay marriage does make me a little nervous.
Particularly as the UK visa came through as the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) was hearing the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals (DACA) challenge.
