It's Important to Stay Current.

Even if it seems like a complete waste of your time and talent.

Last week I finally watched the movie; "Get Out."

Directed by Jordan Peele this was much hyped at the 2018 Oscars.

It must be said that on a technical level it is not an Oscar worthy film. Billed as a horror it relies on sudden, loud bursts of music to make you jump. Which is a pretty remedial technique.

I can see why it created such a buzz at the Oscars though.

It's really an allegory. For the director's fears at breaking into the movie industry. Suddenly having to attend lots of parties where he's examined and evaluated by much older and much more experienced people.

It also satirises western liberals virtue signalling, Woke culture. Where they're all desperate to pat themselves on the back for including an ethnic, gay, Muslim or, most precocious of all transgender character. In order to share in their experience.

What ruined the movie for me was the opening sequence.

This featured a young black man being chased and attacked by a racist white man. All to the strains of the almost folksong; "Run Rabbit Run."

A little ditty about a farmer trying to hunt a rabbit. In the movie it was used to imply the 'rabbit' was in fact a runaway slave.

They couldn't have got this more wrong.

During the Spanish Civil War a vast International Brigade was formed. To fight Franco's Fascist forces.

To recruit the International Brigades produced a propaganda poster. It featured a young girl who'd been killed in one of the fascist air-raids. It carried the slogan; "If You Tolerate This Your Children Will be Next.

It was a successful recruiting tool. A young Welsh farmer was famously inspired to join the International Brigades. Declaring; "If I can shoot rabbits then I can shoot fascists too."

The song Run Rabbit Run is actually an anti-fascist propaganda song. With the 'rabbit' in fact being a Nazi.

This all inspired the Welsh band The Manic Street Preachers to write the 1996 song; "If You Tolerate This (Your Children Will be Next.)"

During the Second World War anti-fascist songs, particularly Run Rabbit Run, became extremely popular in Britain.

Something which was reflected in 1968-1977 sitcom; "Dad's Army."

That featured the character of Private Godfrey. Played by Arnold Ridley.

His great-niece Daisy Ridley should be well known in Hollywood. Due to the Star Wars movies.
